Adkins was the daughter of a single mother of just a few years and was raised in various working-class London areas. Adkins was a fan of contemporary pop music when she was young and learning how to play the clarinet and the guitar. It wasn't until her teens that she was exposed to Etta James, a r&b singer, as well as other performers from the early 20th century when she began to think about a career in the field of music. She was attending an elementary school for visual and performing arts, which was funded by the federal government. A friend posted songs Adkins had composed onto Myspace. Adkins was soon noticed by record labels and signed an agreement with XL Recordings in 2006.
